Southern Ocean PHYsical oceanogrAphy – SOPHYA –

El objetivo general del grupo es el estudio del océano y su rol en el clima y en el ecosistema marino, usando principalmente datos satelitales e in situ y con foco en entender los procesos que dominan la variabilidad en el Atlántico Sur. Este grupo se dedica a estudiar las corrientes y las masas de agua del océano, y su relación con la actividad biológica, la pesca y el cambio climático. Para ello se realizan mediciones con instrumentos fondeados o derivando, y datos obtenidos durante las campañas oceanográficas, también datos colectados a partir de sensores remotos y a partir de modelos numéricos. Se apunta a mejorar la comprensión de la dinámica del Océano Atlántico Sudoccidental realizando estudios exhaustivos de la circulación sobre la Plataforma Continental Patagónica, de la dinámica de la Corriente de Malvinas y de las interacciones que involucran ambas regiones.
